 THE PEARL

  a new musical

Music by Louis Rosen

Book and Lyrics by Arthur Perlman,

based on the John Steinbeck novella, “The Pearl”

"Like his father and grandfather before him, Kino is a poor diver, gathering pearls from the Gulf beds that once brought great wealth to the Kings of Spain and now provide Kino, Juana, and their young son with meager subsistence. Then on a day like any other, Kino emerges from the sea with a pearl as large as a sea gull's egg, as "perfect as the moon." With the pearl comes hope, the promise of comfort and security, the promise of a better life for their son ...."

Based on Steinbeck's novella, which was based on a Mexican folk tale, "The Pearl" explores the hidden depths of man's nature, the depths of evil, and the wonderous possibilities of love.

from Louis: "The score for our adaptation of "The Pearl" combines the simple, direct, tuneful character of Mexican folk music with a more sophisticated, contemporary, dramatic musical language, gradually growing more complex as the story moves toward its inexorable climax. And more than anything, this score is a labor of love. From the moment I read this beautiful, moving book, I heard the songs.

"The Pearl" is written for a cast of twelve and a band of flexible size.

Six songs from the project have been recorded and are available for listening, four fully orchestrated, two in piano/vocal versions.

Please contact Louis directly via this website if you're interested in hearing a recording of six songs from "THE PEARL". (A synopsis and lyrics will be included with the audio excerpts.)
